I can't wait for registration, I think the accoutability and professionalism that goes along with registaration is the biggest and best leap forward I have seen in pre-hospital care in Australia since I started in the profession more than 20 years ago!

It's great to see the continued expansion of opportunities as a consequence of solid groundwork by PA and its representations and submissions to DOHA, Federal and State Ministers and their advisory staff.

Getting paramedics included as an eligible professional group and paramedic practice recognised as a discrete professional field of healthcare has brought into focus the question of various educational and CPD support schemes.

These scholarships apply for any practicising paramedics wanting to attend the PA Annual Conference, the SARRAH Conference, and any other conference relevant to paramedicine / paramedic practice. They are especially valuable for those in rural and remote areas. Eligibility is not linked to particular employment roles or jurisdictions and applies to all practitioners whether in the private or public sector.

They represent new sources of external (Commonwealth) funding worth hundreds of thousands of dollars annually and provides support while conserving members' funds for other professional initiatives.

Those gains show the benefits of a unified national professional body and the results achievable through strategic moves to position the profession.

That's real progress that maximises the outcomes for the profession and practitioners in the long term. But it's important that the opportunities be taken up, and I hope members move quickly to apply before the various closing date(s).

Congratulations to our colleagues in New Zealand and best wishes on the development of an even closer relationship in professional matters. As David Waters has said, it is vital for the profession to have a strong unified voice and independent representative body able to speak on professional matters.

PA also is a founding member of International Paramedic and has been in the forefront of international collaboration, so its members are part of an international community.

I expect this organisational development will be further enhanced by the wonderful collegiate association that has been a notable feature of the PA Special Interest Groups such as Student Paramedics Australasia and the Network of Australasian Paramedic Academics.

On the drawing board and creating quite a deal of interest in Australian circles is the proposed Special Interest Group covering Military paramedic practice. Can we have any indication of the interest in such a development from our members (and potential members) in the NZDF and elsewhere?

Great to see the PA policy advisor is representing the paramedic profession at the higest levels of government. This is one of the vital core functions of our professional body, and a great example of what a united regional body can achieve. We should resource these priorities (at the expense of any commercial folly). Well done!

Well done - great article and completely agree with the key points and goals ...... this is the universal hot potato when it comes to professional recognition / registration of paramedics as with that comes expense to employers. one does not have to look far for successful examples of how this was overcome, my previous host nation South Africa went through this as early as 1992 and all levels of EMS staff were registered and still are today. What this registration and national scope of practice brought to us was unity, consistency, professionalism, better conditions, increased pay amongst many others. It was from "ambulance driver" to health care professional overnite and many other health professionals were not prepared for it however hard work and good information packages ensured the successful system of today. The only danger I see is the possible outcome that afflicts South Africa's EMS profession today and that is that we have 8 levels of pre-hospital scope of practice thanks to a "global scope of practice driven profession"....... with that said the HPCSA is well on its way to promote and create a two level system ie: a technician and a clinician model. Bottom line is that this debate has taken place with successful outcomes so lets all hope ..........

I am so looking forward to the day we become internationally recognised as paramedics, as are registered nurses.

I am an intensive care paramedic from Queensland Australia, I have worked in the UK on 2 separate occasions, first time as an exchange and second time on a 2 year contract. An issue I encountered was the driving licence. I would like to see an internationally recognised ambulance driving licence as this is our office and is very difficult to work without the truck.

Great work guys, keep up the vision.

One of the benefits won by Paramedics Australasia is that paramedics have been included within the professional groups eligible for a number of Scholarships and other forms of support. Rural paramedics can apply for the Nursing and Allied Health Locum Scheme allowing them to take leave to access professional development activities. It's another opportunity that members should grasp.

It's good to see that paramedics may be appointed to such a group, because the patient journey often starts well before the hospital. That appointment will only happen if practitioners nominate themselves or other suitable candidates. The competition may be fierce, but firstly one must be there within the pool of candidates to be considered.

Congratulations to the Board on adopting a fresh modern image for the profession that embodies the patient, the practitioner, the healthcare dimensions and the community. A tough call to include all those aspects in a single logo but this resonates with everyone I've shown it to.
